A corneal transplant, also referred to as a corneal graft, or a penetrating keratoplasty, is a procedure where the front of the cornea is removed and replaced by a donor cornea. These transplants are performed on patients who have damaged and scarred corneas that prevent acceptable vision. Usually the distortion of vision is caused by corneal scarring or irregularity from disease or trauma. The eye care provider must decide when to recommend keratoplasty because it is often not a straight-forward decision.
This surgery is highly successful but there is a long recovery period and a risk of ocular complications. The time of recovery can take 6 to 12 months. Dr. Gailitis, at Ophthamology Consultants is equipped with the right knowledge to help you make the right decision for your vision.
