DSAEK

Unlike a corneal transplant that replaces the entire cornea, DSAEK replaces the tissue on the back of the cornea (the endothelium) with healthy cells from a donor cornea. In this procedure, a small incision is made in the cornea. The diseased endothelium is stripped and removed from the patient’s eye. A disk of healthy tissue is inserted from a donor's eye. An air bubble is then injected and used to push the disk against the recipient's cornea. The main advantage of this procedure over a corneal transplant is that it is less invasive and a faster recovery.

The primary group of patients who need DSAEK is patients with Fuchs Dystrophy, which is a degenerative disorder of the corneal endothelium which leads to corneal edema and loss of vision.
